Accommodations for Test Takers with Disabilities or Health-related Needs

ETS is committed to serving test takers with disabilities or health-related needs by providing accommodations that are reasonable and appropriate given the purpose of the test. Testing accommodations are available for test takers who meet the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA) disability requirements.

Learn more about the accommodations request process.

If you’d like to request accommodations other than those listed below when you submit your request, describe them in Part II of the Testing Accommodations Request Form in the Bulletin Supplement for Test Takers with Disabilities or Health-related Needs (PDF).

If you have a health-related need that requires you to bring equipment, beverages or snacks into the testing room, or to take extra or extended breaks, follow the accommodations request procedures in the Bulletin Supplement.

The following accommodations are available for SLS test takers:

  • extended testing time
  • additional rest breaks
  • writer/recorder of answers
  • test reader
  • sign language interpreter for spoken directions only
  • Perkins Brailler
  • braille slate and stylus
  • printed copy of spoken directions
  • oral interpreter
  • audio test
  • braille test
  • large print test book (16 pt.)
  • large print answer sheet
  • listening section omitted

Before you begin, review the following documents. You’ll need both to successfully request accommodations and register.

To request large-print versions of the Bulletin and Bulletin Supplement, contact ETS Disability Services.

When should I submit my request?

You must submit your requests and have your accommodations approved by ETS Disability Services before you can schedule your test.

Submit your request as early as possible, especially if you’re requesting an alternate test format. Documentation review takes approximately 6 weeks once your request and complete paperwork have been received. If you have to submit additional documentation, it can be another 6 weeks from the time the new documentation is received until the review is complete.

When you’ve been approved, ETS will email instructions to you on how to register for your SLS test. Please wait for your email approval before registering for your test.

How to apply

The easiest, most convenient way to submit your request is through your SLS account. Simply log in to your account, select “Request Accommodations or Review Application Status” on the home page and follow the instructions on the screen.

You can also email your request or send it by mail or courier service. For directions on how to do so, see the Bulletin Supplement.

If you’ve been approved for the accommodations listed below, you can register for and schedule your test online through your SLS account. You don’t need to complete and submit the Test Authorization Voucher Request Form.

  • extended time
  • extended breaks
  • screen magnification
  • selectable foreground and background colors

If you’ve been approved for other accommodations, you’ll need to register by email or mail using the Test Authorization Voucher Request Form (PDF). See How to Register.

If you need to take an SLS test outside the United States for employment, certification or entrance into a teacher education program in the United States, email us at sls@ets.org. We’ll register you at the center nearest to you. There may not be a test center in your immediate vicinity, and in some cases, you may need to make long-distance travel arrangements to get to the nearest test center.
